CSF pressure assessed by lumbar puncture agrees with intracranial pressure.

چکیده
The accuracy of estimating intracranial pressure in brain tissue (ICP(BT)) via lumbar space was investigated using preset pressure levels in the interval 0 to 600 mm H(2)O in patients with communicating hydrocephalus. Lumbar space ICP correlated excellently to ICP(BT), demonstrated by a measured mean difference of 10 mm H(2)O (0.75 mm Hg) and a regression coefficient of 0.98. The concurrence supports the lumbar puncture as an accurate technique to determine ICP in patients with communicating CSF systems.

Changes in intracranial CSF volume after lumbar puncture and their relationship to post-LP headache.
Post-lumbar puncture (LP) headache may be due to "low CSF pressure", leading to stretching of pain sensitive intracranial structures. The low intracranial pressure is secondary to net loss of intracranial CSF. It has, however, not been possible to measure intracranial CSF volume accurately during life until recently. Intracranial CSF volume can now be measured non-invasively by a MRI technique....
متن کاملApproach to Chronic Secondary Headache: A Case report on Unusual Drug Side Effects
In this article, we present the case of a 12-year-old female child who complained of bilateral temporal and frontal headache for 2 to 3 months with nausea and vomiting. Physical examination revealed right-sided sixth cranial nerve palsy and papilledema in ophthalmoscopy. To find the cause of increased intracranial pressure, the patient underwent brain imaging and brain MRI showed no abnormality...
متن کاملSpontaneous Intracranial Hypotension Plus Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: A Case Report Study
This is a case study of a 34-year-old woman who was admitted to hospital with a history of severe orthostatic headache. She was diagnosed as having spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) by undetectable cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure at lumbar puncture, and with evidence of diffuse dural enhancement of the brain detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the contrast-enhance...
متن کاملRefractory intracranial hypertension in traumatic brain injury: Proposal for a novel score to assess the safety of lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainage
Background Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage via ventricular puncture is an established therapy of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). In contrast, lumbar CSF removal is believed to be contraindicated with intracranial hypertension. Methods We investigated the safety and efficacy of lumbar CSF drainage to decrease refractory elevated ICP in a small cohort of patients with traumatic brain i...
متن کاملPseudoarachnoiditis in Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension
The most common causes of intracranial hypotension include persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage from lumbar puncture, spontaneous CSF leakage, or excessive CSF drainage. Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is defined as a syndrome of reduced CSF pressure that occurs in the absence of dural puncture, surgery, or trauma. The pathogenesis is generally thought to be an occult leak of...
